Assignment 3-PartB

Social Media and Privacy:

Social media plays a big role when it comes to privacy, and it is destroying peoples’ lives every single day.  Some people use social media in all the wrong ways, and it is very upsetting.  There is a fine line to sharing certain things on social media and keeping things to yourself, especially if you’re the one that is being attacked.  Sexual assault is a very big issue in society today, and people do not know how to handle it.  Some say it is good to share photos/videos of victims to make others aware, and than there are some that say it is an invasion of privacy towards the victim.  Personally, I agree that it is an invasion of privacy and should not be shared on social media.
In the article the author quoted, “there are half a dozen high school profile sexual assault cases that have centered around photos or videos we share on social media.”  This is not okay, because the victims are now being harassed and this is an invasion of their own privacy.  These victims do not want people knowing what happened, especially without their consent.  People should not even be taking videos/photos in the first place, that is just wrong in every aspect.  Something needs to be done to help resolve this issue, and not allowing these things to go up on social media.  It starts with the social media companies, they need to all be on the same page and understand that this is an invasion of privacy on innocent people.  If these things are posted or shared on social media the individuals that do so should be reported and that stuff should be blocked off the internet.  Then those individuals can be reported to the cops to discuss further implications, and what actually happened.  Use the video/photos as proof rather than awareness!  This is a huge issue today, and it needs to be resolved in a respectable manner.

  1. I really like how you address the issue of posting videos and pictures of sexual assault on social media sites. I agree that they should be used as proof and not awareness. The victims are being violated when this information is publicly displayed, and it not right for them to have to suffer more than they already have. Their privacy should be protected, and especially when lack of consent is involved. Also, your comment on how those who share these videos and/or pictures should be reported to law enforcement is a really good idea. I definitely agree that it is a serious problem facing society today, and should be dealt with in a manner that respects the victims and others affected.
